The following day, a videotape was released to the world press that caused a national uproar. This tape was a recorded video message by the lawyer Rosenberg claiming that he would be assassinated by Guatemalan President Álvaro Colom: "If you are watching this message, it is because I was assassinated by President Álvaro Colom, with help from Gustavo Alejos (Álvaro Colom's private secretary) and Gregorio Valdez" This event shook Guatemala to its very foundation bringing thousands of people onto the streets in protest and forcing the President to deny accusations of murder on live international television.
