Austin Renaud arrested for operating under the influence
| Austin Renaud, 18, a defendant in the Phoebe Prince school bullying case, pleaded innocent to operating under the influence of alcohol Tuesday in Holyoke District Court and was placed under an 8 pm to 7 am curfew. Judge Mark Mason also ordered Renaud to remain drug- and alcohol-free. The same restrictions were imposed later in the day in Hampshire Superior Court, where Renaud, 18, faces a charge of statutory rape in the Prince case. Prince, 15, hanged herself Jan. 14 after what investigators say was months of harassment by several classmates at South Hadley High School. Renaud, of 185 Garland St., Springfield, was arrested by Holyoke police early Sunday morning after they reportedly found him in his car by the side of Route 5 with bloodshot eyes and alcohol on his breath. Springfield lawyer Terrence Dunphy, who is representing Renaud in the Prince case, waived the reading of the drunk driving charge in Holyoke and asked that an innocent plea be entered. Hampden Assistant District Attorney Joan M. Dietz asked for the curfew and alcohol and drug restrictions. Mason scheduled a pretrial conference for June 1. He released Renaud on personal recognizance and warned that if he violates any condition of his release he could be arrested. |
