Mary and Mason are taking on Mark in court for Mary’s rape. The only trouble is, Mary does not want to fight Mark in court and Mason is insisting on justice. To add to the boiling pot, Augusta realizes her sister is about to “commit professional suicide” in defending Mark, so Julia can throw the case and make sure Mark ends up in prison, and make sure another lawyer won’t set Mark free. Augusta tries to stop Julia, to no avail. Mark comes in and interrupts. Julia assures Mark things will work out as they should. Mason and Mary come upon Julia. Mason wants to know how Mark will plead. Julia says not guilty. Mary tells Julia she [Mary] told her the truth. Julia, wanting to stick to the plan, but not able to tell them, says Mason and Mary are making this hard for her and she has a job to do, so please let her do it. Mason tells Julia this will blow up in her face just like David Laurent did. He bitterly tells Mary there is no sense in talking to Julia. Augusta comes upon Julia and says Mason is right. Julia tells her sister that she intends to win and Augusta does not have to watch if she doesn’t want to. The rest comprises Mason and Julia preparing both Mary and Mark for court. Mason assures Mary she can do this.
